Changing The Oil In Your Car: Basic Service To Advanced Or Plus Service

Posted on: 10 July 2018

Most people who take their vehicles in for an oil change pay no mind to any other extras they can have completed in and on their vehicle. They are there for the oil change, and that is that. However, there are at least three levels of car oil change service, each one more "premium" than the last. The intermediate and advanced oil change services cost more, but they are usually a very good value.

Basic Oil Change Service

Basic oil change service is exactly how it sounds. The lube technician removes the oil filter, drains the dirty oil, installs a new oil filter, and fills the oil reservoir with up to four quarts of the least expensive engine oil the shop sells. Meanwhile, all of the engine parts and passages in between are left with dirty oil residue, and nothing else is checked or filled.

Intermediate Oil Change Service

With this service, the technician checks all of the vehicle's fluids while the old, dirty oil is draining. He/she checks transmission fluid, coolant/antifreeze, battery fluid levels (if applicable), windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. If any of these fluids are low, they are refilled, and the cost is included with what you pay for this mid-level oil change service. Some shops even throw in a tire pressure check and air fill for low tires, a considerable bonus when you may be unaware that a tire is low.

Advanced or Premium Oil Change Service

This is what most people call "babying your car." For the price you pay, you get the oil changed, but you also get premium oil refills. That is high quality oil that claims to help extend the life of your engine and "clean" it while it does. All of your vehicle's fluids are checked and filled, the air filter is checked and replaced as needed, the engine is flushed of the old oil and all of its remnants of sediment, and your tires are checked and filled too. Carburetor cleaner is used to help clean the carburetor prior to or in conjunction with changing the air filter. Windshield wipers are inspected and replaced (sometimes for an added fee for the wipers, sometimes for free).

In short, everything is checked, cleaned, filled, and updated during this service. Most people pay the extra money for this advanced/premium service when they are planning a road trip in their vehicles. You may do the same, as it provides peace of mind prior to traveling in your car.
