5 Things You Need To Know About Using A Tire Pressure Monitoring System With Your Motorcycle

Posted on: 19 June 2018

The pressure in your tires is extremely important. You need just the right amount of pressure in order for your vehicle to grip the road correctly. This is even more true for motorcycles than other types of vehicles. With a motorcycle, you want to make sure that you have the right tire pressure at all times, which is where a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) comes into play.

1. You Can Add a TPMS to Your Bike

Some high-end bikes come with built-in tire pressure monitoring systems. However, the vast majority of bikes do not come with their own tire pressure monitoring system. Luckily, this is a feature that you can add to your bike. You can purchase an aftermarket tire pressure monitoring system and attach it to your bike so that you always know the pressure in your motorcycle's tires.

2. TMPS Systems Use Sensors

When you purchase an after-market TPMS system, it is going to come with two sensors. The sensors are in the form of valve caps. You take off the regular valve caps on your motorcycle tires and replace them with the TPMS valve sensor caps. This allows the sensor to directly measure the pressure in your tire as well as the temperature of the air in your tire. This system allows you to get as close as possible to your tires and get the most accurate information possible.

3. TMPS Sensors Provide You with Lots of Information

Your TMPS comes with a little computer monitor that feeds you information about your tires from the sensors. This little monitor varies in size based on the manufacturer, but often looks like a small stopwatch or a small smartphone. It provides you with a variety of different information. It lets you know what the tire pressure and temperature are for both of your tires. It lets you know if the temperature inside of your tires increases or decreases.

You can set up alarms so that an alarm is triggered if the pressure in your tires gets too high or too low. You can set up separate alarms for each tire if you keep them at different temperatures. Your TMPS system can also let you know if your tires start to leak so that you can take action to stop the leak right away.

4. TMPS Are Battery Operated

There are a few different batteries you have to keep an eye on. The internal sensors will have very small internal batteries inside of them. Most systems will come two sets of batteries so you can change them out. The monitor for the system should also come with batteries as well. The monitor should let you know when the batteries need to be replaced or recharged.

5. TMPS Systems Are Easy to Install

Finally, TMPS are easy to install. Just twist off the caps on your tires and replace them with the special sensor caps. Then, clip the monitor on your handlebars or dash so you can easily see the condition of your tires at all times.
