With summer weather rapidly approaching, it's time to think about the hazards that your car will face throughout the upcoming months. If you want to ensure your safety and the longevity of your car before the summer hits, there are a few things that you should do. Here are a few summer preparation considerations to discuss with your mechanic.
How Is Your Engine's Cooling System?
Warm weather can wreak havoc on your car's engine if the cooling system isn't up to par. You'll want to make sure that you have the entire cooling system inspected, and potentially have it flushed if it hasn't been maintained in a while.
There are several components to your car's cooling system that will need to be inspected. For example, you'll need to have the radiator checked to ensure that it is free of damage and there are no particles or rust discoloration in the coolant. Further, you'll need to ensure that the cooling fan is running as it should and the thermostat is fully operational.
If any of these components fail, your car's engine is likely to overheat. In the summer, that's even more likely due to the high ambient temperatures and the lack of cool air to help reduce that temperature.
How Is Your Cabin Cooling System?
As the weather warms up, you'll find that you need your air conditioning to keep you comfortable when you're on the road. Unfortunately, if your air conditioning has sprung a leak or the thermostat that controls the cooling system has failed, you're likely to find that the air conditioning will blow warm air. You can have the system recharged, but you'll need to find the source of the leak first. Your mechanic can test the lines to see where the leak is occurring.
If, on the other hand, your air conditioning doesn't blow at all, that's a sign that the blower motor needs to be replaced. The sooner you test your car's air conditioning, the sooner you can have it repaired if it isn't functioning the way that it should.
How Are Your Brakes?
Your car's brakes will take a lot of abuse through the summer months. Remember that this is the time of year when most people are out traveling, so you'll likely find yourself in stop-and-go traffic on a pretty regular basis. Before the tourist crowds start coming in, this is the time to have your brakes checked and replace the pads if they are worn down.
